Oh, Mini.
I've never met such an energetic, loving, smart, cuddly dog. The first summer after Cole and I met, Mini Reeder truly lived up to her description as a "smart" dog. As Cole and I spent more and more time together, he'd spent less and less time at home, and Mini must've grown bored. We'd come back to his house a few times, only to find that Mini had jumped through the window screen and was running amuck around the neighborhood. She even was picked up by animal control once and got out of their holding crate from the back of the truck. Cole assumed that he'd put a stop to her shenanigans by locking all of the windows so she couldn't escape; hours later, he'd have phone calls coming in from neighbors saying, "We found Mini, and put her back in your house."
Cole thought, "How the heck could she escape? I locked all the windows." Well, Mini figured out how to unlock the windows with her teeth, nose it open, and jump then through the screen. Seriously. I showed Cole the physical stops on all the windows to prevent this from happening ever again. We had to replace eight window screens that summer. Eight. Using the physical stops meant we didn't have this problem for the next three summers. Until this week.
It's been a warm week in CT, so we've had the AC (window) unit running in our bedroom for the majority of it. I was on call 4th of July weekend, and actually had to work on the 4th. Booo. Cole had the 4th of July off and the day after. Lucky. He asked me what I wanted him to work on while I was at work on Tuesday, and I'd said grouting the bathroom tile. Done. After finishing up his bathroom project, Cole met with me to babysit Lucy. As I'd mentioned before, Cole had to take a break from babysitting to get Mini after she'd escaped.
As Cole was blowing bubbles with Lucy, he saw a call coming in from a number he didn't recognize. When he picked up, the caller hang up. Then I had an incoming call from the same number. Cole immediately said, "I think Mini got out." He then received a text saying, "We have your dog." Cole called back and, sure enough, our neighbors a block away found Mini chasing after squirrels. They were able to grab her attention with a ball, and continued to play catch with her until Cole arrived.
We were certain that Cole left the bathroom window open after grouting it. Upon returning home, though, the bathroom window was barely cracked. Surely, a 50+ pound dog couldn't fit through that. We looked at all the windows, and they were all closed. The bedroom. Apparently, Mini muscled the AC unit all the way to the left and jumped through the opening. Gosh, dog. She knew that we weren't happy, and immediately made her way to her safe spot... her kennel.
The next day, Cole and I decided to bake cookies for the kind family that watched Mini until Cole could grab her. They live a block away and we hadn't met them until now. Cole actually doesn't remember their names. I wrote a quick "Thank you" note to the family for watching our little escape artist, and we left the cookies on their front step.
First (and last) time. We hope.
